Couple Dance

www.tangara-brasildance.Gafiera

Gafieira is a social couple dance that was originally danced only in the towns, but which can today be found all over Brazil. Through the close body contact of the dancers dancing Gafieira (feet sliding past each other, bellies rubbing one another, arms and legs interweaving) a form of non-verbal communication between the man and woman is established. Whether fat or thin, tall or short, Brazilians master the art of this emotional dance, which is sometimes sentimental and sensuous or flowing and dreamy, at other times energetic and passionate.

Forró is not only a particular style of dance, it is also a particular style of music. Originating from the North East of Brazil and danced in rural areas, Forrò has recently been enjoying increasing popularity all across Brazil. Forrò is a Brazilian dance style in which the couple dance to the whipping beat of a large rimmed drum, the off-beat phrases of an accordion and the continuous rhythmical tingle of a triangle.

Lambada began in the 1970 s in the North of Brazil. Coming from the Carimbò, a traditional dance from Belèm do Parà taking elements from Salsa and Merengue, Lambada became world famous in the 1980s with the band Kaoma. Characteristic for this dance are the quick turns and swinging hip moves. Today, the Lambada is one of the favorite couple dances from Brazil.
